Canning 101: The Basics

 Families now more than ever are preserving their own foods. Many home preservers assume that if the canning jar is sealed, the food is safe; no matter what preservation method was used. False, this assumption could lead to devastation for you and your loved ones. During the workshop, we will address what methods of canning should be used on acid foods verses non-acid foods; the importance of headspace; new up-to-date resources; the importance of using research-based recipes when home canning; causes of jar breakage, causes of unsealed jars, and storage of home canned products. If you would like to have your pressure gauge tested on your pressure canner, please bring your lid to the program.
